On Tuesday, July 17th, kids from Hialeah and Northeast Dade County gather at Crandon Park Nature Center to compete in the summer camp grand finale sand sculpture building competition.
Sixty students from Hialeah and Northeast Dade County participated in the Architects in the Making Summer Camps for youths 9-17 years old, sponsored by the American Institute of Architects Miami Chapter (AIA Miami), the City of Hialeah and the City of Miami parks and recreation departments.
During the first weeks, the campers learned about world and local
architecture, green building and historic preservation, toured the Deering Estate, and created their own house designs using a CADD computer system. This architecture camp is the brainchild of Rick Ruiz, a Coral Gables Architect. Rick is passionate about the camp and has spent untold hours preparing for it, working with partners in Hialeah and Miami. Rick is a Partner at Marrero and Associates in Miami.
The temperature at the beach was about one hundred degrees, the Sun was hot and not a cloud in the sky. The competition started at 11:00 am and concluded at 3:00 pm. None of the kids seem to notice the weather conditions, they only care about one thing and that was to build the best sand sculpture.
Clearly who won is not the significant part of the story. The fact that so many kids took part in the event is an amazing accomplishment for all involved. Hialeah Parks and Recreations staff members Jaime Garcia, Carlos Ferrufino and Evelyn Treviňo seem exhausted by the weather but smiled proudly when speaking about the whole event.
