Hialeah Parks Host Kids' Camp Sand Sculpture.
On Tuesday, July 17th, kids from Hialeah and Northeast Dade County gather at Crandon Park Nature Center to compete in the summer camp grand finale sand sculpture building competition.
Sixty students from Hialeah and Northeast Dade County participated in the Architects in the Making Summer Camps for youths 9-17 years old, sponsored by the American Institute of Architects Miami Chapter (AIA Miami), the City of Hialeah and the City of Miami parks and recreation departments.
During the first weeks, the campers learned about world and local
architecture, green building and historic preservation, toured the Deering Estate, and created their own house designs using a CADD computer system. This architecture camp is the brainchild of Rick Ruiz, a Coral Gables Architect. Rick is passionate about the camp and has spent untold hours preparing for it, working with partners in Hialeah and Miami. Rick is a Partner at Marrero and Associates in Miami.
The temperature at the beach was about one hundred degrees, the Sun was hot and not a cloud in the sky. The competition started at 11:00 am and concluded at 3:00 pm. None of the kids seem to notice the weather conditions, they only care about one thing and that was to build the best sand sculpture.
Clearly who won is not the significant part of the story. The fact that so many kids took part in the event is an amazing accomplishment for all involved. Hialeah Parks and Recreations staff members Jaime Garcia, Carlos Ferrufino and Evelyn Treviňo seem exhausted by the weather but smiled proudly when speaking about the whole event.

Hialeah Park. What is the Solution?
Keep the Hialeah Park as a Horse Track? Develop the Park into something else?
It seems that residents of Hialeah want the same thing. Although
most people will tell you that there is a debate about what should be the
fate of the Park. As a matter of fact if you search blog’s these days and you
include the word Hialeah, the majority of the information will be about the
Hialeah Park. Most opinions point that anything less than horse racing is a crime to the history of Hialeah.
All of us that were raised in Hialeah or it’s surroundings have a love affair
with the Hialeah Park. The Park has touched our lives. In one way or
another, each family has fond memories of this landmark. It is this love affair and the protective nature of these people that want to preserve the Park.
Unfortunately, reality is quite complicated and yet simple at the same time. The Hialeah Park cannot continue to sit frozen in time. It must move forward. In order to move forward it must meet the now. And it’s fate is really determined by a triangle that may not be able to deliver 100% the wish of the people. The Owner, The City and The State.
Even if the wish of all three were to preserve it as a Horse Race Track, the cost involved would be quite a challenge. Everything from renovation to maintenance may not be feasible. Therefore, even if all three decided to go in that direction, wish is the most popular one, it could be very possible that at the end of the day it may not happen. This is because too many variables exist against it that no one can control.
We believe the time has come when the blaming game needs to stop and
all of us need to think about what is real and what is an illusion. This is the only way that the right people will sit at the table and come up with a decision that makes sense. Let’s remove the pressure from the current politicians of what took place in the past. Most of them were not around when a decision could have been made that would have kept Horse Racing in Hialeah. The owner is a business person who needs to profit from the ownership of the Park. And yes, we agree that his decisions in the past may have hurt the Park. But it was his decision as a business owner and that is all it was, a business decision.
The City of Hialeah would love to have the park become just that-- a park, but they lack the funds to do so. Can't the federal or state government make this possible?
http://miamimemories.blogspot.com/2007/07/hialeah-park-save-last-gem-of-roaring.html
“You just can’t have property of that magnitude sit in the middle of the city idle. That is, in essence, what is going on right now,” City Council President and Park Administrator, Esteban Bovo said. “We have a jewel sitting in the middle of our city. It is not operating. It’s not doing anything.” http://www.therealestatebloggers.com/2007/06/28/is-the-hialeah-race-track-in-southern-florida-going-to-turn-into-a-development/
The city of Hialeah was actually the $9 million mortgage holder until Brunetti finished paying off the loan several years ago. In its last formal appraisal, the property was valued in the mid-$40 million range, asset Manager Bovo said, but since then Brunetti has been offered as much as $1 million an acre for Hialeah. http://www.baltimoresun.com/sports/horseracing/bal-sp.hialeah25jun25,0,6914962.story?coll=bal-sports-headlines
The current administration has demonstrated a willingness to listen to different points
of view and exercise patience to perhaps give all the ideas a chance to work themselves out.
Instead of finger pointing and dwelling on the past, let us work together and be part of the solution. And maybe not Horse Racing, but maybe something that all the generations to come will love as much as we have loved The Hialeah Park.
We welcome your point of view, positive ideas and opinions in this issue. We will caution you, we will not publish finger pointing, negative criticism and blame. Let’s us know how you feel so we can move forward. E-mail to us pictures of The Park, new and old. info@hialehtodo.com

"iPod, Starbucks and Internet. Hialeah Now!!!"
New Fun Places Opening Up!!
Have you noticed all the new and fun places opening up in Hialeah? Already opened are Chili's, Starbuck, and Lowes. Ready to open soon are Target, Applebees and rumor has it that Fuddruckers is coming to the Westland Mall area. Have you been to the new Publix Sabor Latino on 49 street, east of the Mall? And what about Express Clinics? We have been informed that as many as five Express Clinics will open by next year in Hialeah.
So why all the attention from this new and exciting companies with Hialeah?
Simple, every business person who knows the area is aware that Hialeah is in the early stages of a great influx of new and exciting businesses. These businesses want to capitalize in many aspects that will soon make Hialeah the great place it was always meant to be.
It's location! As Miami-Dade County expand, Hialeah benefits more and more because of its tremendous location. Surrounded by two airports which makes it very attractive to any business entity. From those who depend on the Airports for shipping to those who need easy access for travel. Take East 8th avenue (LeJeune Road) and within minutes you will be at Opa Locka Airport to the North or Miami International to the South.
Did you know that Hialeah now extends South of I-75 all the way to NW 170th street?
The Palmetto Expressway (SR 826) and I-75 meet in Hialeah. Okeechobee Road (SR 27) on the South with access to both the Palmetto Expressway and State Road 112 provides access to major traffic arteries right into Hialeah.
It's People! No longer is Hialeah "Agua, Fango y Factoria". Now is "Familia, Negocio y Alegria". The population is getting younger and although a desire to keep the great traditions in place (cafecito and pastelitos), they also want the new and fun places like Starbuck and Chili's.
A New Mayor! The New Mayor has vision and continues to show that he is completely out of the box. He is in touch with new technology and new ways of doing business. He could be at the end of the day the most important piece to the puzzle that Hialeah needs to finally place it back in the now.
New and Exciting companies such as Express Clinics have seen the awesome opportunities that exist in Hialeah today. They project opening five locations inside Navarro's within one year.
There objective is to provide health care for acute common ailments such as common cold, flu, urinary tract infections, amongst others which until now have required an emergency room, urgent care or doctor's office visit. They will also be offering preventive medical advice, on-site diagnostic testing, treatment of a variety of common dermatological conditions and immunizations.
Just South of Westland Mall on 49th street and West 16th avenue is the new Publix
Publix Sabor is a supermarket developed with a Hispanic influence, featuring important differences to product brands, services and store
environment. Ads and product information are offered in both English and Spanish. All are intended to broaden the reach to the Hispanic community while creating an experience that everyone will enjoy. For more information on this new and exciting concept go to:
http://www.publix.com/sabor/
Part of the shopping center on West 8th avenue and 49th street is on a lake (The old Zayres and Publix Buildings) . Can you imagine demolishing the existing structure and building Sports Bars, Internet Cafe's, Restaurants, etc. facing the water? How many other places in Hialeah have the potential for night life to flourish?
Hialeah is part of the iPod, Starbuck and Internet generation. And if you don't believe us stop by Starbucks or Chili's in Hialeah and you will see a sample of successful businesses that are turning Hialeah into the place that it was always meant to be.
